I did this walk back in January 2020—pre-COVID and pre-dog or kids—so I can’t say for certain if it’s toddler, baby-sling, or dog-friendly. But from what I remember, it was a pretty gentle walk, reasonably short with no major climbs. It’s one of those routes that gives you amazing views for minimal effort—a big win in my book!
I originally came across this walk on the Countryfile website and thought it sounded lovely, so we decided to give it a go. We started in the picturesque village of Hawkshead, where parking was easy to find. The route begins fairly flat, winding gently through the landscape before becoming a little hillier later on. The views are something special, especially in winter. On crisp, clear days, you might see mist pooled in the valleys, creating this magical, otherworldly effect. You’ll spot the fells of Ill Bell, High Street, Wansfell Pike, and Red Screes to the east. Looking north, you can admire the Central Fells and the Fairfield Horseshoe. To the west, you’ll see the iconic Langdale Pikes, Bowfell, Wetherlam, and the Old Man of Coniston standing tall.
Once you’ve taken it all in, the route loops back to Hawkshead, where you can finish up with a well-earned tea or pint in the village. The paths were in great condition when I did it, and it’s a walk I’d definitely recommend if you’re after something that’s both straightforward and stunning.

LEGEND
DOG-FRIENDLY WALK
This means that my Boxer dog, Rosie, is able to complete the walk. She is a highly energetic medium-sized dog who is accustomed to walking 1–2 hours daily. While she is a relatively inexperienced hiker, she can easily manage high jumps.
TODDLER-FRIENDLY WALK
This indicates that I feel comfortable allowing my toddler to walk (either independently or with reins) or carrying him safely in a suitable toddler hiking backpack.
BABY-IN-A-SLING-FRIENDLY WALK
This means I feel comfortable completing the walk while carrying my baby in a sling, either forward-facing or backward-facing. I will always indicate at the start of the walk which position I used for that particular route.
DISCLAIMER
Please note that my assessment of a walk as being dog- or toddler-friendly is based on my own experience and circumstances. What works for Rosie, my toddler and my baby may not necessarily be suitable for your dog or child. Always use your judgment to assess whether a walk is appropriate for your specific situation.
