I had the pleasure of photographing Gillene Butterfield recently. Gillene is a talented soprano with Opera North, having performed roles like Despina in Così fan tutte and Zorah in Ruddigore. She also balances her career with being a mum of two, bringing a down-to-earth energy to everything she does.

Gillene came all the way from Leeds for the session, and we kept things simple and relaxed. We shot in my living room, using the natural light to create a soft, flattering look. With some background music and a cup of coffee, we had a casual chat while I took photos. The relaxed setting really helped bring out her natural presence, and I’m happy with how the final portraits turned out—authentic and professional, with a genuine feel.

Over the years I’ve built a portfolio career as a professional photographer, opera singer, wardrobe assistant and singing teacher. I have a MMus from the RNCM, a Bachelor in Theatre Sciences and Musicology from Ghent University and I’m a qualified teacher. When my son was born in 2021 I quickly realised that an opera career wasn’t as compatible with being a mum as much as I would like, so I decided to change my focus completely to photography and web design.

I prefer working with daylight in casual surroundings while having a chat making sure you’re at ease and relaxed. It’s the little moments in between that make the best shots!
